    Strong performances from senior Holly Page and junior Aaron Derner guided the University of Wyoming cross country teams to a dominant showing on Saturday morning at the Aggie Invite. Page won the 5-kilometer race in 19:10 to help the Cowgirls take the team title with a nearly perfect 16 points, while Derner placed second over 4 miles as the Cowboys won with 23 points.   • Women's cross country picked second, men third

    OGDEN -- The Weber State women's cross country team was picked to finish second in its bid for their fourth straight Big Sky Conference title, according to a vote of the league's head coaches released Tuesday by the conference. Both Northern Arizona men's team and women's team were picked first in the preseason polls. The WSU men's team was selected third. The Wildcat women's team has captured the conference title in each of the past three seasons. With the departure of defending champion Summer Harper, due to a LDS mission. Coach Paul Pilkington willl look towards junior Jamies Stokes and sophomore Ellie Child to lead the team. Both athletes finished in the top 10 during last year's race. Northern Arizona received nine first place votes in the polls and totaled 141 points. WSU was second with 2 first place and 130 total points, Eastern Washington was picked third while Montana State was picked to finish fourth. On the men's side Northern Arizona was a unanimous choice, receiving 10 first-place votes and a total of 142 points. The Lumberjacks have won the last seven Big Sky titles. Southern Utah was picked to second with 2 first-place votes and 133 total points. WSU was third with 115 points. WSU returns five of their top six runners which includes Trevor Ricks, who placed 48th last year in the NCAA Mountain Region. They will also see the return of Mike Hardy, who redshirted last season and a handful of other runners who have recently returned from serving LDS missions. Weber State begins the season Sept. 5 at the Utah Murray Invite in Murray. They will also compete in meets at BYU, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.   • WSU track teams honored for academic success

    OGDEN - Weber State's men's and women's track and field teams have both earned academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA). In addition, five Wildcats earned All-Academic individual honors. Both Wildcat teams were named to the All-Academic Team. The Weber State women's team posted a 3.42 team GPA, which was the best for a university in the state of Utah. The Wildcat women were one of eight teams from the Big Sky that earned the team All-Academic honors. Individually, four Wildcats were named to the Division I All-Academic team. Tiffany Hellstrom, Amber Henry Schultz, Jamie Stokes and Taylor Ward all earned the honor. Each carries a 3.79 or better G.P.A.. Hellstrom earned All-American honors in the javelin. The Wildcat men's squad recorded a team GPA of 3.17 and was one of 116 men's programs that were honored by the USTFCCCA. The �Cats were one of five teams from the Big Sky to earn the honor and posted the best G.P.A. of any school in the state of Utah. On the men's side Anthony Gregory earned the individual All-Academic honor, one of 17 athletes from the Big Sky on the team. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point averagee of 3.25 or better and must have qualified to compete in the first round of the NCAA Division 1 Champsionships.     Recent Colorado State graduate Trevor Brown did for Team USA over the weekend what he had done so many times for the Rams throughout his All-American career in green and gold. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native won the 400-meter hurdles at the 2014 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) U-23 Track & Field Championships, capturing one of 12 gold medals for Team USA on the third and final day of competition Sunday at Hillsdale Stadium.
