MileSplit50 Girls Team Rankings Countdown

14.

Team: Buchanan (CA)

Analysis: The good news is that Buchanan returns its top two runners from last year, junior Corie Smith and senior Meagen Lowe. Smith won the CIF Division I championship a year ago and was 21st at NXN. Lowe was second at the state championships and 16th at NXN. Throughout the 2017 season, they seemingly were attached at the hip.

But what's somewhat concerning is that while the Bears return their top three runners from last season, the program graduated its bottom four runners and will need to find inexperienced varsity athletes to take their place. That's not a terrible position to be in, especially considering the talent up front. Buchanan remains talented -- as an No. 14 national ranking would indicate -- but the team will learn about its personnel as it competes and will likely fight for an NXN berth alongside teams like Claremont and Granada in California.

Buchanan is coming off a season where it finished 12th at NXN, second at CIF Division I, first at CIF Central Section, third at Clovis, first at Woodbridge and first at John Seaman. The team knows how to win. The only question is how quickly the team adjusts to its new personnel and puts that knowledge to use.
