GOLDEN, Colo. GÇöUniversity of Colorado sophomore Abrianna Torres got her 2014-15 season off to a great start when she won the pentathlon on Saturday at the Colorado School of Mines Alumni Open and Multi meet.

Torres recorded a score of 3,617 points in the pentathlon. She started the day off with a time of 9.10 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and followed that up with a high jump mark of 1.62 meters, which tied for fourth. Torres won the shot put portion of the event with a toss of 13.04, over two meters further than the next competitor (Erica White had the runner-up mark of 10.36). She placed second in the long jump (5.56) and finished the day with a time of 2:44.54 (15th overall) in the 800.

A couple of TorresGÇÖ teammates also finished in the top 10 of the pentathlon. Mariah Slack finished sixth overall (3,318) and Michaela Wenning earned an eighth place finish (3,224).

On the menGÇÖs side, Andrew Ghizzone took sixth overall in the heptathlon, finishing with 4,566 points. He had a great second half of the competition, which included a third place finish in the pole vault (4.05) and won the 1,000 in 2:47.64.

CU also received some great performances in the individual track and field events. Mark Jones placed second in the high jump, clearing 2.00 and also placed fourth in the 60-hurdles (8.46). Michael Egotanda was the runner-up in the long jump (7.17) and placed sixth in the triple jump (13.87).

On the womenGÇÖs side, Rajon OGÇÖQuinn was second in the high jump with a mark of 1.70, while Bekah Daniel took home a fourth place finish in the triple jump (11.58).

The Buffs are off until January when they will travel to the U.S. Air Force Academy for the All-Comers Meet on January 10, 2014.
