EntriesBILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Track and Field teams are headed to Spokane, Wash. this Friday and Saturday, Apr. 11 and 12 for the Seventh Annual War against the Region Meet.
MSU Billings will compete for the first time in Spokane at the meet hosted by the Community Colleges of Spokane.
The meet will be scored with dual-meet scoring. On team will consist of schools from Washington including: Community College of Spokane, Central Washington University, North West University, Gonzaga, Saint Martin's University, Seattle University, Washington State, Western Washington University, Eastern Washington University, and Whitworth University. The other team will consist of regional schools from the states of Idaho, Montana, and Oregon. These schools include: Carroll College, Eastern Oregon, Treasure Valley Community College, Lewis-Clark State, Northwest Nazarene University, University of Idaho, University of Great Falls, and Montana State University Billings.
Head Coach
Dave Coppock is looking forward to the meet. This is will be the third meet for the teams. So far this season, three student-athletes have met the automatic qualifying marks set for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships taking place in May. Coach Coppock is hoping his teams will achieve more qualifying marks at this meet, the largest event of the season.
"This will be a fairly large meet with some very good competition, close to 1,000 student-athletes are registered for the meet," Coach Coppock said. "At this point in the season we're starting to focus in on the events we need to get qualifying marks and those we think we'll be competing in at the GNAC Championships."
While some student-athletes have met their provisional marks, at this meet some athletes will be competing for the first time in their primary events.
"Our 5,000 meter runners need to push their times down a bit to either qualify or improve their previous qualifying marks," Coach Coppock stated. "For example,
Drew Galahan will be running his best event, the 800 meters, for the first time this spring. We've been running him in the 1500 in the earlier meets to work on his strength and endurance, so that will be one key event for us. We need to improve our men's 4x400 meters relay to ensure a spot at conference, as well."
Due to the size of the meet and the schools competing, the format will be set-up differently than the teams' previous meets.
"The meet format will be fun and different," Coach Coppock explained. "The Washington schools will all score as one team against a team comprised of the Montana-Idaho-Oregon team in a dual scoring format. I think it'll be a great experience for our team."
Also, competing this week on Wednesday, in a bid to work on their times Coach
Nick Collins took a small group of athletes to Idaho State to compete in the Bengal Multi-events. At the Bengal Decathlon and Heptathlon,
Hope Reid is competing in the women's heptathlon and
Cameron Stanek and
Donald Hamm will be in the men's decathlon
